BSWN and WINCA Convene in Vienna for a Joint Technical Exchange on Nuclear Security
The Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network and Women in Nuclear Central Asia (WINCA) participated in a joint technical exchange programme in Vienna, Austria, from 11–13 February, bringing together professionals from across the Black Sea and Central Asia. The programme was organized by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies and hosted by the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The exchange combined expert briefings, high-level discussions, and technical visits to key international institutions, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), and the TRIGA research reactor at the Atominstitut of the Technical University of Vienna. Participants engaged directly with leading experts on nuclear security, nonproliferation, emerging technologies, and infrastructure development, while also gaining practical insights into verification, monitoring, and emergency response mechanisms.
The programme provided a valuable platform for professional exchange and capacity-building, fostering dialogue between regional networks and Vienna-based institutions. It also strengthened connections between BSWN and WINCA members, supporting the development of future joint initiatives and reinforcing cross-regional collaboration in nuclear security and nonproliferation.
Beyond the technical content, the visit created space for meaningful engagement among participants, enabling the exchange of experiences, perspectives, and best practices across institutions and countries. These interactions contributed to strengthening professional networks and advancing a shared commitment to enhancing nuclear security across the region.
