5th STATEMENT

of Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network (BSWN) on the attack to Chornobyl NPP on February 14,2025 at 1.50am

The third year of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine has significantly escalated the threats to Ukraine’s nuclear sector, posing a direct and urgent danger to the Black Sea region and the world.

Previously, a drone attack and nuclear facility was recognized as a credible threat. Today, on February 14, 2025, the long-term warnings of nuclear security experts have been fully confirmed due to the attack of a Russian uncrewed aerial vehicle on the new safe confinement of the Shelter, which is located above the Chornobyl NPP Unit 4.

The attack has not only damaged the integrity of the outer shell of the containment and equipment in the crane maintenance garage, but it has also created a real threat of radiation contamination. The consequences of this are not just difficult, but impossible to predict. The arch has been seriously damaged, adding to the uncertainty of the situation.

We, the professional community of women and men in the Black Sea region, stand united in our call for collective action to neutralize threats to Ukraine’s nuclear safety and security. We are committed to supporting its recovery after the war, and we stand ready to provide our expertise, time, and support to ensure Ukraine’s safe, secure, peaceful, and independent nuclear sector.
